Beginnings

February 5, 2020

Hello everyone! I'm Emma, and I started Awaken Studios last March. It's been almost a year, and I felt I should share my story with you -- how Awaken (as I affectionately call it) began, why I started it, and the journey along the way!

I never thought that one day I would start an art business, or that I'd even continue making art after I graduated from my formal schooling years of doing art in junior college. And yet here I am, and I'm incredibly grateful.

A bit more about me: my parents signed me up for art classes when I was a child, and over the years I've dabbled in painting, sculpture, graphic design and jewelry making and more. I love making things with my hands, and my years studying H3 Art in junior college were particularly refreshing for me because it exposed me to art history and art theory as well, honing my intellectual and aesthetic appreciation of art and how I approached art-making as well.

A Level Coursework.

Just to share a bit more about myself -- this was my A Level artwork! It was an installation art painting diptych done on acrylic sheets with enamel paint, through a process of pouring and manipulation. I wanted to capture and communicate the feeling of restoration that I feel whenever I sit by a vast body of water, absolutely enamored and captivated by the tide and how finite I feel in comparison. (This motif of the ocean continues in my work now!)

It was my first time producing an artwork with so many months of thought put into it, and I recall it with great fondness. It was also my first time venturing into abstraction, which now informs my painting style because of the incredible potential that abstraction offers us to feel and encounter, as opposed to a realistic rendering of an object or landscape.

Fast forward through graduation and exploring the world beyond school, a small abstract painting I made for a client when I was busy planning weddings, and a school trip to India where I produced a painting to capture what the city of Bhopal felt like to me, and Awaken Studios was born. I had been painting for myself for a while because I enjoyed it, storing the small works under my bed.

When I shared them with my friends, I saw that my paintings could encourage them. Make them feel a little happier, a little more hopeful. I found value in offering and sharing that with more people. My family and friends have been incredibly, incredibly supportive, and here I am. This journey has been absolutely unexpected and rewarding, and I am deeply heartened and encouraged by both the people who have walked alongside me these months, helping in little ways, as well as the people I have met over time!
